Deep in thought about Cora’s brother, Dillon almost crashed into Professor Dukan on his way down from the roof.

“Ah, Dillon, you’re just the person I wanted to see. Can you come up to my office?” the professor asked.

Even with vampire speed, Dillon hurried to keep up with Professor Dukan’s long legs. He whipped through corridors and flew upstairs, twitching with nervous energy. Inside his office, he paced the room slower but still at vampiric speed, making the papers on his desk flutter each time he passed by.

“I’m having trouble analyzing your blood, Dillon,” he confessed. “This has never happened before. I’m going to have to use another more sophisticated lab.”

“What are you looking for? Is there something wrong with my blood?”

“A whole new blood type, Dillon. It could be an incredibly exciting discovery.”

He showed Dillon the screen of the tablet device he held. The screen was full of indecipherable medical graphs and information.

“And incredibly dangerous for you, too, of course.”

“Hold on now—incredibly dangerous for me? How?” asked Dillon.

“A whole new blood type in a world where the apex predators live on blood? Come on, Dillon, show some intelligence, please. Vampires and humans alike may want to get their hands on it. Madame Dupledge has been called away, but we need to discuss the implications.” He paced more rapidly. “You might need more protection while you are here.”

“What do you mean more protection?” asked Dillon.

“I don’t think you understand. I explained how rare and precious golden blood is, yes? Your blood could be even rarer than that, like the rhodium of blood types.”

“Rhodium?”

“The rarest, most expensive precious metal in the world. It’s used in catalytic converters, but that’s beside the point.”

“I get that it’s rare, but so what?”

“Dillon, you have seen the reaction of your peers—your blood is alluring to other vampires, and it’s not just because of your human side. We think it may have powerful properties. The problem is that its composition is still changing.”

“Because of the golden blood?”

“Maybe, perhaps more likely it is because of the other bloods you have ingested and because your vampire side is waking up.” He stared at him. “For the moment it will be best if you keep this to yourself, Dillon. Don’t even tell your closest friends.”

Dillon looked away guiltily. “Um, okay. Why?”

“At this stage, the fewer the people who know, the better. These things have a habit of getting out.”
